A Scary Night

This incident happened 15 years back, but when I think of it, it still brings shiver and sweat on my body. I was in my teens at that time. I am a big fan of cricket and enjoy playing a lot. Many of my friends were in college and some had jobs. so playing at night was the most convenient time. We had a playground in our government college and it had flood lights from evening till mid night.

There were 10 teams playing together on the same field. Luckily we used to play with tennis ball, so the chances of getting injured was little less. It was still crowded but we had the eye to identify the right ball :). We used to play thrice a week and sometimes the entire week in summer. I had to fight with my parents to go out at night but my parents agreed as we used to go in groups, and my parents bought me a bicycle so I can commute easily.

One Saturday afternoon my friends and I decided to go and play in evening. But there was a change in plan and my friends decided to go for a movie. My parents were not in favor of going out for movies, so I decided to go alone to the ground and play with other teams. It was little cold that night, by midnight the match got over and I headed back to my home.

I used to travel back home mostly along with my friends and that day I was alone. I am generally not afraid of nights. But that night changed me a lot. to reach home, I had to cross a river bridge, a shamshaan ghat and fields of course through bunch of dogs. I am not sure if you remember most of our old Hindi movies had chudails wearing white sarees and in fog it is not that difficult to visualize. Generally we don’t think of ghosts but if you are alone in night those scary images easily come to our mind. I started biking on the bridge and unfortunately my cycle chain came out. I wanted to fix it but it was little dark, so I started walking along with my bike. As i was walking on the bridge, the river below was so calm and shining from the moon above. It was a pleasant site to sit down there and talk with your friends. But as you remember I was all alone. I crossed the bridge and that was the easy part. the next hurdle was the shamshaan ghat. There were two bodies burning, and I could hear the bone breaking noises. During day time that sound gets hidden but during night you could hear it very clearly. I could see the smoke rising out of those pier. As I was walking the thoughts came to my mind of how bodies and burned, what happens after that, do some of them really turn ghosts if their wishes are not fulfilled on earth. My mind started filling with all weird ideas. As I crossed the shamshaan ghat, the next hurdle was to walk 3 kms between the fields. As the wind was blowing you could hear the hustle noises in those wheat fields. I live walking through fields and I am used to it during day, during night the dogs take care of those fields and they will chase you away. and if they are i group and if it is your unlucky day they could bite you to dead. I was little afraid of it and was walking very carefully. Suddenly I felt as if someone was walking behind me, I got little scared. I wanted to look behind and see, but I had heard stories that we should not look back in such situations. My heart started pounding and I could hear my own heartbeat. I walked then stopped and then walked…..this continued for another 5 minutes. I know something was walking behind me and I could really feel that sound of someone walking beside me. I did not had the guts to look around. I was scared to death and literally pee’d in my pants.

I was afraid of the ghost behind me so wanted to run, but I know the dogs were also there so I should not be running. This confusion went on for some time. But then I started weighing in which one is better, dying by a ghost or getting injured by dogs. I thought living was more important, so I dropped my bike there and started running home like a mad dog myself. I ran at such a speed and could have easily won a gold medal in Olympics. I did not look left or right but ran straight inside my house and jumped in bed next to my dad. My dad was surprised as I generally sleep alone, but that day he let me sleep with him.

I did not tell this story to any one yet. I don’t know if there was really a ghost behind me or someone was playing a trick on me. But I still think someone was really behind me, I could still feel than unknown shadow walking besides me. Since that day onward I hardly venture outside alone during night time.

Hope you all like my story. Please do share your comments, and any similar experience you had.
