English language has become the global medium for communication and is very important, if you want your voice or business to reach across the globe. But there is a big misconception that, you need to know English to communicate well.
Communication and languages are two different things. Communication is an art of expressing your views in a simple way so that the message is clearly understood by your audience. You don’t need to use big English jargons, but chose words which are easy for audience to comprehend or in simple terms, easy to understand. Also, you don’t need to know English to communicate. As long as you can connect to your audience through a medium of choice they understand. Take a case of a deaf person, for him it is easy to do lip reading, but the same would be difficult for a person who can hear well. Another example, take case of our honorable Prime Minister, he is not that highly educated nor he has good hold on his English language, but when he speaks there is utter silence in the crowd and people like to listen to him. That is the power of communication.
I have lot of friends who studied in government schools and with English as their secondary or tertiary language, but when it comes to education they performed really well. Some of them are in a bigger management roles and guiding huge teams. The key thing I noticed in all of them is their skills on solving complex problems using clear and simple communication skills. I have also noticed that confidence comes naturally to those who are good communicators.
In India there are many students who study in villages and with local language as their primary language of teaching & learning. For those students, I would suggest they need not fear of not knowing English at the same level to city students. They should continue to learn in whatever medium they can and gain as much knowledge as possible. Knowledge can be shared in any language. They should focus on speaking confidently in front for their teachers and fellow students. This will get rid of stage or public speaking fear. Parallel they should focus on learning English either in their school, by reading newspapers and books, or joining some public speaking forums. Nowadays internet is available in every corner of the country, there are so many materials available online that will help you improve your English learning and speaking skills.
Here are some of the tips to Improve Communication skills.
