Today 18th March is celebrated as Holi all across the country, and also across the globe by the Hindu community. It is not right to say anymore that only Hindus celebrate it, but it is a festival of the county which brings together people of all community.

It is popularly known as festival of color, but it is one full packed dhamaka festival, with people singing, throwing colors at each other, some enjoying the food delicacies, and other dancing to popular Hindi songs.

It also marks the beginning of Spring festival, and is celebrated to mark the win of good over evil.

Generally Holi is celebrated for 2 days.

a) First day: Choti holi or Holika Dahan. On this eve, bonfires are seen across the neighborhood. The event is to celebrate Vishnu’s victory over Holika. Holika tried to burn Pralhad in fire, but instead herself gets burnt into it. People celebrate this event by burning Holika on the eve of Holi. Next day when ashes are cooled down, people apply of each other’s faces to keep the evil away from them.

b) Holi: As per Hindu mythology, Holi also represents the love between Krishna and Radha. Krishna was of dark complexing and his love Radha was very fair. Krishna was worried that Radha may not accept him because of his color. Krishna’s mother suggest him to smear color on Radha’s face and that event brought them together.

Holi is a festival which brings people together of all religion and spread love and brotherhood across the country. Kids eagerly wait for this day, they buy balloons, water guns, colors and play through out the day with all the friends.

When I was a kid, some of my Hindu friends used to come to my house early morning and color me with pink, red, silver and all sought of colors. We then used to go to other friend’s houses and repeat the act. We used to enjoy through out the day. As evening come by, then we used get ready with new clothes and jump on sweets, and then followed by singing & dancing.

I have few suggestions to all of us,

  • Please don’t force people who are not ready to get wet or apply color on face. Some people are sensitive to artificial color, so please respect that.
  • Try to use natural colors which won’t harm the skin or hairs.
  • Some people drink a lot in Holi, please avoid drinking as this is one the biggest reasons for fights on Holi.
  • Be careful when you burn holika, make sure kids are safe from it.
  • Please respect girls and women. Forcing them to play Holi with you in not good. let them enjoy with their friend with whom they are more comfortable.
  • Don’t through balloons on people who are driving vehicles, this may lead to accidents.
  • Don’t run on roads which may lead to accidents.

But make sure, you all enjoy a lot.

Happy Holi to all of you!!!!!!!!!

Please share you feedback on how you celebrated Holi.
