Vaiskahki (also called Baisakhi) marks the first day of the month of Vaisakh. It is primarily celebrated in Punjab, Haryana and other parts of Northern India. This year it falls on 14th April 2022. It marks the beginning of spring thanking God for the good harvest. For farmers this is one of their biggest festival.
It is also celebrated as Sikh’s New year. It was on this day the tenth Guru (“Gobind Singh Ji”) laid the foundation of Khalsa to fight against the evil. It is also called as the Khalso Sirjana Diwas.
This festival was traditionally celebrated by Punjabi’s & Sikh’s and primarily in rural area. But now a days it is quite popular in the entire North India and by all religions. Each family and community have their own ways of celebrating it.
In Punjab small communities come together to prepare Baisakhi meals. Or many Sikhs prefer going to Gurudwaras to take holy bath and enjoy Langar with the community. Gurudwaras are illuminated and decorated to their best, and Kirtans would be conducted through out the day. Women’s wear the traditional white and orange dress on this day.
On this day in the entire state of Punjab and some other places in North India, every one can feel the festival environment on the streets with Punjabi’s dancing the famous Bhangra and Gidda. This is a moment where people of all religion come together and celebrate this moment
